#Debauch2015 Interview: Joe Basick of the Can’t Stand Yas
I can’t believe that it’s already been a year since TuffGnarl.com last graced the best damn dive bar in Miami with an amazing night of rock and roll debauch. I guess that means we’ll have to go back and throw and even gnarlier show! We’ll be back at Churchill’s Pub in Miami this Saturday with music, go-go dancing and food specials.
Music will be provided by NO FRAUD, 210, PARTY FLAG, The Riot Act, Mr. E & MLE, Pre-Tenses, Pocket of Lollipops, Reluctance and the Can’t Stand Yas. Carla X and Isobel Devi will be on hand moving to the rhythms and sounds of the bands. On top of all of that there’ll be a few specials going on for all you foodies out there.
Before the show, I wanted everyone to get to know one of the bands better: Miami’s very own three-chord punk band, The Can’t Stand Yas. I had an opportunity to speak with Joe Basick from the band and we got to talk a bit about everything.
TuffGnarl.com: For those who don’t know you, tell us a little bit about yourself and the rest of the band?
Joe Basick: Well the band consists of four members: Marcio Gemelli (known as Mace), Alex Guti, Matt Touchstone and I, Joe Basick.
How did you come up with your band’s name?
I’m a huge Seinfeld fan and it came out because I constantly quote them. Todd Slimak and Nick Pfrenger were part of the coming up of the name.
If you could open for any band (past or present) who would it be?
I would say The Clash, but since Joe Strummer has passed and because they are all still alive, Dead Kennedys, past version. Don’t care for what new singer they have. DK Please get back together.
What are your three favorite albums?
New Edition, Jimmie Swaggert Live and any live acoustic Tesla.
For your set on Saturday at Churchill’s are we going to be getting any new material?
Tons. We plan on doing a four hour set. I’m going to run it by Chuck Livid, but I don’t see the issue. Should be fine. We are always rocking out new tunes. We also got Grim on drums from Miami punk band The Crumbs. But Grim has decided to change his name to Mace now. He wanted to make sure that goes down on the record to all his fans out there!
What’s the craziest thing that you’ve seen on stage while performing?
I can’t even think. I’ve seen so many things and preformed countless amounts of times. When I’m on stage people are just dancing and having a good time, I’m always good to my fans.
I know you’re a Fins fan. What did you think about the upcoming season?
I would say yes and yes and yes but most likely no. First off, we are making the playoffs and we are going to win the division! You hear me Todd and Travis!?!
If the Dolphins don’t make it into the playoffs is Joe Philbin canned or is Tannehill’s number finally up?
Only under crazy circumstances will Philbin stay, like if we are 11-5 or 10-6 and we don’t make the playoffs, cause some of the other team made it on some technicality, like what happened last year in the NFC south. But you know that’s football. Tannehill is a good QB. If you look at his stats every year he has shown improvement. Last year he threw for 4000 plus yards and ran quite a bit. He had 27 passing TDs and only 12 interceptions, not bad at all. Considering the rest of the league, I think he’s OK. I’m hoping that in his fourth year he’ll show that he is in charge of the offense and has matured. Should be a great season. Have to say it’s the most excited I’ve been about the Miami Dolphins since the Pennington/Parcells year.
If the world were to succumb to the events of The Walking Dead, how long would the four of you in the band (Marcio, Matt, Alex and yourself) survive? Why?
As long as there is beer, calzones and donuts, I won’t go down without a fight. Alex and Mace will most likely just cut some grass somewhere. Matt will be like me just looking for beer. We’ll all get bitten just because that show has gotten so depressing! I always thought the Misfits song “Brain Eaters” would be a great song for that show.
There are going to be go-go dancers at Churchill’s on Saturday. Do you have any sweet moves that we can expect to see?
Yeah I’m always hyped to see go-go dancing. Actually, I had dreams of being a backup dancer for Michael Jackson when I was younger. I had my Jackson zipper jacket and was ready to go. I had learned all the breakdance moves, which was like five at the time. I could do the worm better than anyone out there. But nowadays I need a few drinks in me if you’re going to get me out there spanking some planks.
What do you call your move?
Walk like an Egyptian.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Ladies swipe right! I like candlelight dinners, long walks on the beach and dandelions. I want to thank God for this interview, without you this wouldn’t have been possible. Also want to give a big shout out to my family and crew in NYC and Miami, my band (Alex, Mace, and Matt), Josh Xmas, Chris Callous, Raf Classic, Shimmy Berman, Rocky and Milo, Angel, Mary, Gene, Heidi, Kristy, Lori Garrote and my newly born niece Gabriella.
Join us this Saturday, August 22 at Churchill’s Pub (5501 NE Second Ave, Miami, FL) for TuffGnarl.com’s second annual Evening of Rock & Roll Debauch. The show starts at 7 p.m. Admission costs $8 at the door. Use the hashtag #Debauch2015 to follow or talk about this event on social media.
