#Debauch2015 Interview: Pocket of Lollipops

Pocket of Lollipops is the husband-and-wife team of Tony Kapel and Maitejosune Urrechaga. The band has played in Miami for years and has always been active in the local art and music scene. They’ve always extended a helping hand to upcoming bands and artists.

(Side note: Tony Kapel helped co-found this very site.)

You two are pretty much Miami’s music power couple. Does your marriage make collaborating easier or harder to do?
Collaborating is easy, underpants sessions are a good thing at 10 p.m., 2 a.m., anytime.

Name three records that you can always turn to.
Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, Perfect Teeth by Unrest and Ed Matus’ Struggle by Ed Matus’ Struggle.

Tony, you’re running a studio now as well right?
We call it Houndstooth Cottage. We’re working with a few acts on EPs and we make compilations. Not trying to be a label; [it’s] more of a “lets get shit done.”

Art has always played a major role in Pocket of Lollipops’ mythos. Why is art so important to your image?
Art is a dead word – we just make stuff, wouldn’t know what to do otherwise.

You guys working on any new material?
Yes. Maite is always making new songs. She’s got her “book of notes,” which probably contains two albums’ worth of stuff. I’m always messing with the keyboard making soundscapes, which we haven’t even shared with people. We’re working on a new album, which we took a totally different approach to the recording and the total album layout. Here’s a demo of our song “Punal Unicorm.”

Why should people come out this Saturday to Churchill’s?
People should come because they cleaned the bathrooms.
