Mango Hill Records Comes Out Scorching
Mango Hill Records is a new platform for music releases out of Miami who’s brainchild is Jason Joshua Hernandez. Jason is the leader of Miami’s premiere soul unit Ketchy Shuby and he has organized with friends a new label to put out the best of new soul, funk, spoken word and whatnot from the area and beyond. In the fall of 2016 they released their first gem only digitally and it is a smooth soul jam single by The Black Dove titled Hardships. You can give a listen to it here.
Over the winter Mango Hill Records released digitally a fun Christmas recording that should be revisited when the season returns.
Here is the big news though, the first slab of plastic to arrive from Mango Hill is a 45 seven inch record by The Scone Cash Players with side A being The Slitter and side B Necking. Both sides of this gem are organ instrumentals that are all Booker T meets NYC with some Deep City thrown in for the 21st Century. There is a good reason for that, too. The players on this record are some truly talented cats that have paid their dues and sharpened their chops with the best of them. Here are some facts from these badass dudes.
Adam Scone is on organ. He has mastered his skills touring with the Daptone Records artist Sugarman Three. Also playing six nights a week in a classic organ lounge in NYC and in countless other bands. He is head Scone and has the baddest left hand since Sandy Koufax.
On guitar is Thomas Brenneck, he’s the guitar player for the Budos Band and the Menhan Street Band. He also is a session player frequently for Daptone Records artists and has done work for Amy Winehouse, Charles Bradley, Lady Gaga… need I say more.
On side A the drummer is Eric Kalb who has sit in with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, John Medeski, George Porter Jr. and John Scofield.
On the B-side the drummer is Homer Steinweiss who has played with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings too, the Arcs and Mark Ronson.
Recorded in New York, produced here in Miami, it is no wonder why it has all the flavors. The release date is March 28th and I advise you to buy it now before supplies run out. Pick it up locally at Sweat Records in Little Haiti or Radioactive Records in Fort Liquordale. It is also available online.
The Scone Cash Players full length is due out in May titled “Blast Furnace” and is promised to have even more all-stars on it.
Next up for Mango Hill after that in June is Ketchy Shuby’s new single which is Jason’s first love. Stay tuned and keep’m coming.
