Every other week I write micro blurb reviews of amazing new music. Below is the latest batch of music that you need to check out.

Somali Pirates – Skeg City

The Somali Pirates consists of current and former members of No Motiv, In Control, Retaliate, Gentlemen, Hammerkill, Let Em Rot, and PC Deathsquad. They’re also the greatest thing to happen to San Diego since Jon Cougar Concentration Camp. Skeg City is currently on the top of my list for the best 7” for 2014. Hardcore meets surf guitar undertones with early Dropkick Murphys gang vocals. What’s there not to like?

Best tracks: “Skeg City”, “Nawont”

Hoirong – दण्डनीय अपराध

India’s Hoirong borrows elements of various genres – punk, post rock, pop, noise, art rock  and mixes all those influences into a very real and profound experience. Remember back when the Flaming Lips actually dared to be creative? दण्डनीय अपराध (criminal offense) is a lot like that. Hoirong has released an outstanding musical achievement of an album. I for one look forward to seeing more from this band.

Best tracks: “Don’t Mind”, “कुता”, “Of course/Glucose”

Wish – S/T

Wish creates beautiful and alluring melancholic soundscapes that are fully engaging and engrossing. There’s a lot of a Sonic Youth Daydream Nation era awesomeness happening on this record. In my 25 years of actively listening to music I cannot recall any band even getting close to that scale of greatness. A triumph of a debut.

Best tracks: “Nothing to Say”, “Frances In Space”, “Retro Grade”

Total Jerks – Jerks Addiction

I’m not sure what is going on in Indonesia but the current hardcore/punk scene in that country rivals that of our own in the early ‘80s. Total Jerks continue the proud tradition of Indonesian punk. This EP rips into you and never, ever lets go.

Best tracks: “My Life My Problems”, “Full of Shit”,

Diners – Always Room

Diners identify themselves as a “desert pop” band. I’m not exactly sure what the fuck that means but the world needs more of it.

Best tracks: “Hangout With You”, “Citrus”, “Overcasters”
